8-6-71 I downloaded and listened to it on 8-6. Jaw dropping smack myself upside the head good. The me and my uncle sandwiched in the other one seems like something that should not work but does amazingly. I cant get enough of 71 if anyone knows any other can you post it. 12-16-78 is another sweet aud.

Aug 5 + 6 '71 are pretty much the only good AUDs from that year. If you want to hear how BAD an AUD can be, check out the May 29 + 30 '71 shows sometime. or the 4/4/71 AUD....

On the other hand, 12/5/71 (a radio broadcast) has so much audience in the mix, you can easily pretend it's an AUD.

This show is basically just like an early '71 show and is a much-praised AUD (the show's not in the same league as 8/6/71 though):

Also from 1970, 10/23/70 is an excellent AUD, though I think the show's just average. But I can't pass up an opportunity to recommend the 3/21/70 late show....not 1971, I know, but just as essential listening as the other Port Chester shows from 1970, and better quality.

This is one story (from the new 3/19/73 AUD) that helps explain why there aren't more good AUDs from the early years:
"This was recorded by Dan H. using Adam G.'s microphone. Dan was very close to stage. About halfway through the show, one of the band members (I believe Bobby or Phil) pointed to Dan and a member of the Dead's crew came into the audience, grabbed the mic and cut the cord. He would only give the mic back if Dan handed over the tapes. Dan handed him all his blanks and what was in the machine at the time, as well as one or two with music on them. He managed to keep this one and the NRPS opener."
You can also hear a taper being busted in the 5/16/70 show, and the band pointing out a taper on 12/31/70. The Dead were extremely anti-taping in those days.
Weir's helpful instruction to the tapers on 8/6/71 to move back several rows was an unusual exception.

Really?? I guess i always assumed the dead were taper friendly. I find that shocking. any ideas on when and why that changed??
